Theatre North Web Page These young women were motivated by the lack of opportunities for African American actors to exhibit their talents in their community or any other place in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Theatre North became and remains the only venue for most black actors to cultivate and exhibit their skills. Alumnae from the company have made appearances throughout Tulsa and surrounding communities, in addition to working in universities, with Tulsa Opera and other theatre companies. Since 1997, we have staged over 10 festivals, 85 productions, 255 performances, numerous workshops and summer youth programs. Over 700 artists and technicians have come through our doors. Now in our 28th year, serving as Oklahoma’s only African-American community theatre company, Theatre North continues to offer contemporary and locally commissioned works in various styles from the South African classic, "Master Harold and the Boys," to contemporary drama, "East Texas Hot Links". The company serves both as a community theater and as a presenter. Theatre North won in nine categories of the Oklahoma Community Theatre festival, OCTAFEST’01; and winners n the Southwest Regional AACT/FEST 2001 for technical (costumes) and the Individual Best Actor Award for Vanessa Adams Harris for her role Lady Red in the play, "For Colored Girls". Theatre North won the OCTAFEST’03 State Festival First place, the OCTAFEST’03 Outstanding Production, OCTAFEST’03 Technical Award for the set, and Vanessa Adams Harris won a Individual Best Actor Award for her character Sadie Delany, on March 15, 2003. At the regional Southwest ACCT’03 festival in Amarillo, Texas on April 11,2003, Theatre North represented the state of Oklahoma competing against groups from Texas, New Mexico, Theatre North won 3 awards in this competition, Best Technical (Set) Ron Hilderbrant, ( Hair/Makeup) Myrna Avance, and All-star regional cast, Vanessa Adams-Harris |
